My husband's story: Solar Energy

Hello - this is Scott, again: We installed solar energy on our home a few months back - and we have had several requests to find out more about the impact on our overall energy usage (and our associated electric bills), so...

Now that we finally have seen a couple months of our electric bills - we can report: It is going GREAT!!!

THE PREP: Before we ever considered solar, we followed the 5 R's. We "refused" unnecessary usage by donating most small appliances (coffee maker, food processor, vacuum cleaner, microwave) and turning off electronics when not in use. We also tried to "reduce" our existing energy usage as much as possible by installing dimmers, painting our interior a light color, and taking basic steps around insulating (attic and basement insulation and weather proofing our windows/doors), and turning the thermostats down (in my office and the house).

OUR BASELINE: Our total electric energy usage for the previous 12 month period was 5431 kWh - mainly associated with lighting, home electronics, the blower on our gas insert fireplace, and the electric heating in my basement office (I wear a puff jacket on all but the warmest days). We use natural gas for our cooking, tank-less water heater, and our primary heating (our gas insert).

THE DECISION TO GO SOLAR: I like to do things by the numbers (hey, Bea is the "artsy" creative one, but I am an engineer by training, so I like numbers...). So there was no way that I was going to make an investment if it did not make any financial sense, especially working in a start-up these last four years (i.e., less than stable financial situation). Well, the bottom-line is that the numbers did make sense - we are using our savings from the zero waste lifestyle to fund a 20-year solar lease (to provide more than 90% of our anticipated power for the next 20 years) providing us with a return on investment of 13%.  The plan was also based on adding comfort to our lives (e.g., being to be able to work from home without a puff jacket) and making room for the future (one of our goals is to ultimately get an electric car).

THE IMPACT: So what has the impact been?  Well, we did actually turn up the heat - so I don't have to wear the puff all the time. But despite the relaxation of the "thermostat tyranny", we have seen a huge decrease in our month bills:
  • For our first full month (FEB 13 to MAR 14): We used negative 5 kWh (our meter ran backwards). Of course, in Northern California, we had a sunny, warm February, with virtually no rain. For the same period in 2011, we used 601 kWh.
  • For the 2nd month (MAR 14 to APR 13): We used 141 kWh. Last month was cold and very rainy (i.e., less solar power), we had guests and turned up the electric heaters. For the same period in 2011, we used 567 kWh.
  • Bottomline: Our total electric bill for two months is $17.50, plus $8.88 in unavoidable taxes, etc. For comparison sake, the same two months last year cost us $207.28.
  • Environmental Impact: As of Friday, April 27, Solar City happily informs me that we have generated 1579 kWh of electricity, eliminating 2022 lbs. of CO2 since installation (equivalent to 1.0 mature trees).

    NEXT STEPS:
I have to admit that we have learned a lot about solar energy during this process (e.g., solar installation, financing, net metering, etc.). But it did not stop there...In fact, as part of the deal, we also received an energy efficiency audit…and apparently I did not do such a great job on insulating our home during the "prep" step.  We found out that we were losing 43% of our heat (!) through air leakage, so we are taking further steps to better insulate our house, by adding insulation in the attic, and sealing the drafty floor boards from the crawl space below. We are also looking for more energy efficient bulbs to fit our dining room's chandelier. Next winter should show further improvement in energy savings!

I am sure that Bea has other plans in store as well...maybe we will "simplify" our kitchen by eliminating our gas-powered stove and replace it with a simple electric-powered hotplate ;)

Zero Waste Lifestyle: time and money consuming?

Soon after the New York Times article came out about our lifestyle, I received comments on the blog about time and financial concerns related to the Zero Waste Lifestyle.

"I wonder exactly how much time/money you put into the effort?" wrote Julie K.

Not that I particularly choose to pick on you, Julie K, quite the contrary. I completely understand your concerns and feel that they represent those of many readers. I started out just like you (running an average household that filled a number of trash bags a week), and a few years back, I would have raised the same objections to the Zero Waste lifestyle. I would have let those concerns stop me from making waste reducing changes, stunted by the picture of a lifestyle that seemed so unattainable. But here is what I found out thru the course of our metamorphosis (the quotes all belong to Julie K):
    TIME:
"Making of balms, cleaners, etc. and sorting through the trash, etc are very time-consuming for many people who work 1-2 jobs":
    • The 1st step of going Zero Waste is SIMPLIFYING (a bonus if you do work 1-2 jobs and can benefit from any simplification at all), which is figuring out those items that you do need and those that you can live without (remember the 80-20 rule?), and narrowing it down to your personal staples. At one point I made cheese, and then found out that it was not worth the amount of time and money involved when I can just get it from the store straight into my jar. Simplify! You might not need that balm like I do and I am clearly not saying that you should make balm or mustard if you don't need them! More power to you, if you do not need them!
    • Zero Waste is also an ever changing journey, where one can adapt according to the also ever-changing market and/or family tastes. A couple of weeks ago, a new store opened and I found yogurt in bulk... Do you know what that means? I don't make yogurt anymore. Also, my son grew out of his taste for soy milk... Do you know what that means? I don't make soy milk anymore either.
    • "Sorting through the trash": I don't have any to sort. That's the point of all of this. If you stop it before it comes into your home, it does not even need to be addressed.
    • Did I ever mention that I work 4 part-time jobs? If I can do it, you can too... all you need is "to care" to get started.
"Many of your readers with little extra time may see some of these changes not as a fun hobby, but rather as a chore"
    • Caring for the environment is neither a chore nor a hobby, but rather a citizen's duty. Look around, and get informed. Educate yourself about the impact of our society's wasteful habits, it will soon become clear to you that we can't keep on doing things the way we've done them for generations. If you don't want to do it for yourself, then at least have some compassion for those that will succeed you.
So, how much time do I really spend working on our Zero Waste?
A couple of hours a week, Friday afternoons...That's when I grocery shop and run errands that might take me to a store. While dinner is cooking, I might squeeze oranges for OJ or once in a blue moon make mustard.
And this blog helps you access information that took me a couple of years to figure out. Now, that's a time saver!
    MONEY:
"Many specialty shops like Whole Foods are quite pricey"
    • Whole Foods, you already know, is not my favorite store (see a "Letter to Whole foods" or "Difficult trip to Whole Foods" article). But it is the largest bulk vendor in my town, and many others. So, while I try to shop as locally as possible, I consider it our main option (I have not been to Rainbow Grocery in San Francisco for three months). If you have a better (and more ethical) option than Whole Foods, please go for it!
    • In Whole Foods defense though, it is hardly "Whole Paycheck", if you stay away from the prepared foods and cut down your meat consumption. In the past 2 years, we've seen our grocery bill significantly decrease. About a 1/3 less than what it used to be (How did we ever think that packaging was free? Did it ever occur to you that it is included in the products price?)
"In the past few years I've also noticed a huge rise in the prices at the farmers' market"
    • Inflation hits not just the supermarket, but every business, and that includes the farmers' market. As for organic, I believe that they are worth the upfront investment: the more you buy organic, the more likely we'll see those prices drop. It's a simple economic rule.
    • Quality veggies and food, like anything else of quality, does not come cheap. In the long run, it is better for you than "Top Ramen" and is worth it, but you know that already.
    • That said, the best time to shop the Farmer's market is at closing time, when farmers slash prices. They rather sell their produce for less than pack it to take it home!
"The glass and stainless canisters you use are expensive when compared to the (free) plastic bags at the store"
    • One does not have to purchase a glass canister to reduce their waste, on the contrary. Please reuse those that you have... That empty pickle jar would be perfect for buying olives in bulk. Many other options also abound in thrift shops. No excuses. I personally have been collecting the french jars mainly from thrift stores for 7 years and have loved their versatility (waterproof, durable, heatproof, freezer compatible, universal and interchangeable tops, and available in many different sizes). But no need to comply: Find what works best for you and your budget.
    • Our stainless canteens are one of our best buys. And so you will hear from those who have made the same investment. Canteens pay for themselves in only a few months from what you saved on water bottles! (Not to mention that bottled water is essentially tap, and that you eliminate plastic leaching into your drinking water.)
    • As for the "free plastic bags": Nothing in life is free... find out what the real cost of free plastic bags is! (http://www.reusablebags.com/facts.php?id=2)

"All the things you do are admirable, but maybe not possible for the average person to take on (at least not all of them at once.)" That last bit in parenthesis is one thing I could not agree more with! Bit by bit is surely the way to do it.
Besides the environmental benefits, is it all worth it? Just for the sake of our health (knowing the outcome of packaged/junk food, and the effects of plastic packaging on our health ;), I would do it all over again. And while I thank you, Julie K, for your valuable comment, I do hope that you too will take steps to reduce your waste... You'll be amazed at what you'll find out about yourself.

    Do you remember...

When you were in school and you had to vote on different things...

Well, we did that tonight and it was so cute...

I had to stall the voting in order to get my camera!

We had three movies to choose from...
    Tom and Jerry
    Madeline
    Signing Times

They were supposed to cover their eyes and raise their hand for the movie of their choice!

There was a whole lotta cheatin going on!

But even more than that, there was a whole lotta cuteness going on!

When the voting was over with we had to remind Abby that she forgot to vote!

    She was a swing vote!

Tom and Jerry won for tonight!

Volunteer Spotlight: Cris Cohen & Jonny Justice

Volunteers of all sorts help at Family House, from weekly volunteers, to those that make dinner for families, to those that host arts & crafts and other activities. Particularly special volunteers are our Therapy Dogs & their people. These (human) volunteers bring their certified therapy dogs once a month for a couple of hours to bond with families going through crisis. Therapy dogs offer extremely valuable positive interactions - not only good to relieve stresses of the mind, but also to improve negative health conditions.

One of our favorite therapy dogs-people-combos is Jonny Justice & his person, Cris Cohen. Cris first heard about Family House through 4Paws for Healing about 2 years ago. Since then, Jonny has become quite a celebrity - winning a Gund contest to have a stuffed animal made in his likeness. Cris absolutely adores Family House and even donated the stuffed animals to the families.

When Cris is not volunteering at Family House, he works full time for the San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency and also supports Bad Rap, an organization in Oakland that rehabilitates  and finds homes for homeless Pit Bulls.

Cris, you provide so much joy and laughter to families at Family House through Jonny’s amazing and adorable tricks! We are so lucky to have such a great friend and Family House advocate!

Thank you so much for your support of Family House!

    Volunteer Spotlight: Wai Har Lee

Wai Har Lee has logged more than 400 volunteer hours at Family House since she started in 2006.  Her dedication and compassion go beyond the tasks she performs, which include working off the house checklist (restocking supplies, tidying and cleaning common areas, etc.) and volunteering at events.  “Children are precious,” she says, “and none of them should have to suffer.”

Her empathy for the patients and their families is what brought her to Family House; the thankfulness of the families is why she continues to be so dedicated to our mission.  “The families appreciate my presence, and often say Thank You to me.”  Wai Har’s strength and time help provide shelter for those who suffer so they can focus on regaining strength and health, and get back to enjoying the everyday joys of life.

Wai Har shares and is a living example of the beliefs of Family House.  Thank you, Wai Har, for all you have done over the many years that you have volunteered with Family House!

Lauren Becker: How I Got Involved with Family House

Even though she lived just one block away from Family House, it took a chance interaction on Muni with one of our families for volunteer and YPAC Board Member Lauren Becker to find out about Family House.

“I thought it was a large apartment building conveniently located right across the street from UCSF - a perfect location for nurses, doctors and other hospital staff.  I did not know that 50 Irving Street was one of two houses where thousands of families have called home since 1981.”

One evening, on her way home on a crowded rush-hour N train, Lauren noticed a woman sitting with a sick child and several suitcases.  The woman placed her son on her lap and offered the seat next to her to Lauren.  Though she tried to decline, the mother insisted that Lauren take her son’s seat.

Once they were sitting together, Lauren asked the woman where she was headed.  The mother said that she and her son had been travelling via train for several hours from Northern California so that her child could receive cancer treatment at UCSF.

“Living so close to the hospital and having a car in the city, I asked her if she needed help with anything, and said that I’d be happy to go grocery shopping, or whatever else she needed. To my surprise, the mother declined my offer. With a huge smile and a small sense of relief, she told me she was being taken care of.  I asked where, and she said Family House.”

That fall evening in 2009, Lauren went online and signed up to be a volunteer.  Not only has she been a tremendous asset to Family House as a volunteer (she started with house cleaning/organizing tasks, then moved into working in the office with the development team), she is also a member of our Young Professionals Advisory Council.  Through YPAC, Lauren helps to organize fundraising events for Family House, as well as in-house activities for families, like arts & crafts and family dinner nights.  Thank you, Lauren, for being a caring part of our community.  Your love and compassion helps make Family House a home!

    Waiting for ...

    Emma Joy

    Ellie Mei

Our Article 5... It should have arrived on Monday but now it is Thursday and there is no sign of it. I am hoping it has already been sent but they just missed the notification. Please pray that we will receive notification of it soon!

After that we wait for our TA AND THEN WE GO ASAP!

We are thinking that we will not be able to travel in the end of May and just hoping and praying that the beginning of June will work out!

These two little girls need to get home soon! We can hardly wait to welcome them into our family!

Thank you Jesus for these precious little girls!

    Our Weekend!

The little children had their first karate tournament on Saturday!
They had so much fun and came home with a lot of hardware!
They see Johnny getting trophies and medals so they were thrilled to finally get their own!

Johnny went to prom this weekend!
There he is with his date...
    I mean dates!
Yes, both boys(Will and Johnny) took Gabby to the prom!

The both got her a corsage but...
I sent the second team(hubby) to the pictures and well, the pics weren't quite what they should have been. (That's just between us!)
Johnny said "Dad spent most of the time talking AND then the camera ran out of batteries..."

I guess that's what happens when it's the 5th time through...
Our poor Luke- he'll be the 13th ;-)

The kids love to go get donuts/ muffins and coffee with Dad in the morning.
They really wanted to have breakfast outside today!
    Dad said yes...
    I said it's 44 degrees outside honey!
Dad said so they'll eat fast!

They did (eat fast) and loved it!

We went to church with Katie and Andrew this morning it was so nice! The church they are being married in is absolutely beautiful!

Katie helped Sarah do her nails!

They are the sticker kind and look so cute!
    Sarah was thrilled!

This weekend we also had recital practice for Ava and Anna, manners classes and 2 MRI's of the brain.
It was a bit busier than usual and I did think maybe we should not go to church this weekend but we ended up going... and everything fell into place- perfectly!
    Only God!
And yes, my fleeting thought of skipping church was... well, wrong...

This weekend I came across two children that I remembered from a waiting child list. They were such precious children- quite unforgettable. I had just been wondering IF I would ever be able to find out what happened to them?

And then God led me right to them- it was so cool!

I wish there was a data base so we could see where these precious children are and also see their forever families.

    How was your weekend?

    How Old Are You TODAY?

    Emily,
can you tell us how many weeks old you are today?

    You're right!

You are 4 weeks old today!

    Oh My Goodness!

    She's BRILLIANT!

Emily had her 4 week check up and is 8.5 lbs(up from her birth weight of 7.2 lbs!
She is sporting a nice tummy and a pair of full cheeks now!

Check out Katie's blog for a cute little video!

    Thank you for Praying!!

Wow- I have some good news to post!! To be quite honest I am surprised about this, being a christian it may seem like I did not have the faith in God like I should have. I prayed for a miracle but doubted... I guess I have learned a lesson. About a month ago I posted about my cousin's son Brian who had brain cancer. He had just had a severe stroke and was sent home from the hospital to be "with" his family. There was nothing they could do for him. I don't have any of the specifics but yesterday I got an email from my cousin- I was nervous to open it... But guess what that- mountain moving, gasp giving, awe inspiring God did now?  (this quote is from Linny's blog !) Brian is doing much better. His mom said he is still fighting and amazing his doctors! He has made changes for the better and is making some progress towards recovery! He will start in home physical therapy tomorrow. They have been doing some themselves and it has been helping!

The stroke was quite severe so he will be entering into a rehab facility soon for physical, speech and occupational therapy. He has a long road ahead of him but he is determined to get better. They are so thankful for all the prayers, thankful that he is still with them and hope that he will defy the doctors and make a full recovery.

I do not know what Brian's future will be but I do know that I have a thankful cousin- they are thankful for every moment they can spend with him, They are thankful for the many prayers that are coming their way, they are thankful for his progress and it give them more hope with each day!

Thank you so much for you prayers and please keep praying! God hears you and it is so appreciated!
    Blessing to you,
    Jean

    Listen!

With your ears, with your eyes and with your heart!

Sometimes I find I need to listen to the children more...

They speak to us in different ways. They often let their needs be known without words...

Sometimes it is through tears, through a whine or even distance.

It has been brought to my attention a couple different times that our Sam needs to be watched. He is inadvertently seeking attention and help through other adults. He doesn't understand what he is doing. He doesn't speak english- I can't tell him. he doesn't remember his first set of parents who were with him for the first 14 months of his life. He doesn't know what parents do or why he even needs them. It is up to us to show him, to teach him and

Between not feeling well, jet lag, many children and Hubby and JOhnny busy with the college search- I have missing some red flags. 2-3 days a week I have had to be everything to our little crew! Including the disciplinarian. Last night I spent some time praying over it and decided today was a new day.

Instead of "No Sam" today was going to be a "Yes Sam" day.
Instead of a frown and a disapproving look today I would make a point to smile more at my dear boy!
Instead of saying naughty- I said "Good Boy"!
Instead of being too tired to laugh I decided I needed to have the energy to laugh more and enjoy the cuteness!

Instead of focusing on learning, I am going to focus on enjoying what we are doing and having fun. I probably have jumped the gun with our two newbies as far as school goes. They need time... especially Sam. I don't know if he has even held a pencil before- it all seems so foreign to him.

Sometimes I find myself learning some very important lessons from some very little people!

    Mei Mei !!!

    We LOVE Mei Mei!

We have watched ALL her videos and adore all of them
(but #4 has always been our favorite)!

Our local FCC(Families with Children from China)/FCA(Families with Children from Asia) group invited Mei Mei to our Mpls!

We had our own sing, dance and learn session with Mei Mei!

Madeline had a cameo appearance and danced with her!
I was proud of her for getting up there and dancing in front of everyone!

The children loved every minute of it!

She did many of the songs and movements that she has in her videos!

Melissa felt right at home! It was all so familiar to her!
I know she did lots of dancing in her orphanage and school!

It was so much fun for everyone!

Mei Mei looks just like she did in her videos!

Before the program started and as we were checking in- we were able to talk to her!
They loved seeing her in real life!

At first the big girls found it hard to partake(they were a little self conscious) but they quickly got over it and joined in the fun!

    It was a fantastic day!

Then Melissa got a chance to dance with Mei Mei, too!

    She did a wonderful job!

It was a workout for all of us!

    Even the parents got involved!
    Yep! me too!
I wouldn't have wanted to miss it!

It brought back wonderful memories for all of the children.
No matter what the situation was in China, they all love the Chinese songs and dance!
It's a soft place to land in their memory banks!

Mei Mei lives in Providence, RI.
She is now a professor at Brown University.
I do not how many appearances she makes each year BUT I would highly recommend having her to your one of your FCC/FCA functions!

After our hour long session we had cake and juice and a Q and A time. Then it was pics and a chance to look at her videos and Chinese writing books!

She has 2 new videos out #8 and #9!

FYI #4 and #9 are the best! Although we would recommend all of them!

And YES there will be a #10!

We bring these videos to China with us when we adopt.
Both the new children and the children we bring with us,
    enjoy them!

The Who Travels to China Saga!

Sorry, I'm milking this subject for all it's worth but it has been a challenging one at our house. We have put a lot of thought and prayer into it and...... drumroll please...

We have decide that that Sarah and Anna will go with Hubby and I.

There are so many reasons why they should go and why they should not go- they all make sense. We are thinking that Sarah will have challenges either way - whether she goes or stays home. If she goes she will be with us, she will be part of the experience and she will conquer some of her fears. She will see that she is our daughter forever. She will go to China and she will come home to HER home. By the time we get home she will have known her new sisters for 2 weeks! When it is all said and done she will be fine.

Our pictures will have her in them. That way the memories will be fun for her, too.

It will be challenging but it feels good and we will have fun!

We will be doing lots of praying and we will be asking for lots of prayers from you if that's okay!

So today the four of us hopped in the car to go and get our visas! I love getting things done - check this one off the list! UNTIL, we got there and found out they are open from 12-6pm ... except not on Wednesdays... they're closed on Wednesdays. How can you be closed on Wednesdays? Who on earth is closed on Wednesdays? Sundays yes, Saturdays maybe, even maybe on Mondays but Wednesdays?

Being the problem solvers we are - we went straight to get our pictures taken so tomorrow hubby can take them with him and order our visas. (the kids and I are not available to go tomorrow). So as of tomorrow we can check that off the list- yippee!!

    A Weekend on Colorado!

Working on wedding plans with Matt and Caitlin!

Denver was in the 70's but it was in the 40's at Winter Park.
    Thank goodness we brought layers!

We drove to the wedding site and finalized a few things!

The kids have done a lot already and it was so nice to hear what they have decided on
    and we needed to...

get going on the grooms dinner, which is our responsibility!
We were able to meet with a few restaurants and check out some other possibilities!
The rest will be done over the phone!

It was beautiful in the mountains!

Hubby and I are excited for our littles to see this place and to spend some time here!
We are thinking cowboy boots are in order!

Thankful to have had this time here with Matt and Caitlin!
